ERNIE WOOD, El Rincon y La Esquina, 2021, reduction linocut

Paper size: 38 cm x 38 cm | Image size: 28 cm x 28 cm

My print is a pun.

It begins as a riff on the compare-contrast wisdom of Josef Albers’ Homage to the Square, which explores how one color influences how we see another. Then it rolls in a compare-contrast of its own with a visual exploration of how words also affect perception.

With a background of prickly pear cactus that locates the image in the Mexico-Southwest US landscape, the print portrays “Rincon" and "Esquina," the Spanish words for inside and outside corners. The images reinforce how two words provide richer, more specific meanings than the plain vanilla (and vague, by comparison) "Corner" in English.
