The enchantment of things
NAOMI ZOUWER
9 July - 20 August 2022
Naomi Zouwer is interested in the way inanimate objects call to us, appealing to our senses and inviting us to appreciate their materiality and particular charms of pattern, colour, texture or story. Drawing upon the tradition of still life painting and rhopography - the depiction of trivial items - Zouwer revels in the enchantment of objects that are ignored and overlooked in everyday life.
Zouwer works across drawing, printmaking, painting and textiles, making works that engage with ideas of cultural heritage, identity and the social role of personal objects. Recently, Zouwer has explored the process of translation from one medium to another, reworking and remaking her paintings and collages into lithographs, screenprints and etchings.
The information that is inevitably lost and found in this process has fed back into her creative practice. It is here in this process of translation that the exhibition takes shape; in the finished and unfinished works, fails and wins, and studio experiments that reveal and celebrate these objects that “call”.
