application guidelines

Eligibility

  • Applicants to the residency program should not be enrolled in undergraduate studies (including undergraduate honours) in the year of the residency.

  • The residency program aims for a balance of disciplines, media, and experience: please ensure your application clearly demonstrates your level and area/s of experience in print media and other relevant disciplines.

  • If you have previously undertaken a Megalo residency, you are welcome to reapply; however please note this in your CV to assist in the selection process.

  • Joint applications (for up to two participant artists) will be accepted; however only one stipend will be awarded and both participants must undertake the residency at the same time.

Assessment

  • Due to the high number of applications received, we are not able to give feedback on individual applications.

  • Successful applicants in previous rounds have generally:

    • Provided high-quality support material relevant to the proposed project, and illustrative of the calibre of their practice;

    • Proposed a clear and coherent project, and demonstrated the importance of accessing Megalo’s facilities in order to undertake this project; and/or

    • Expressed the impact of this residency as extending their overall practice, and offering new opportunities for their professional and creative development.

PhotoAccess partnership
Megalo residents in 2025 will also receive free membership with PhotoAccess, the ACT and region’s centre for contemporary photography, film and video and media arts. Residents will receive access to PhotoAccess’ film developing, darkroom and digital making spaces, support and mentorship from PhotoAccess staff and reduced rates on a wide variety of artist and photographer led workshops.

Assistance and WHS
Megalo is able to offer some technical assistance to artists throughout their residency; however the level of assistance available will depend on staff scheduling and specific expertise. If you think you may need more than occasional assistance or advice, please indicate in your application proposal what help you may require.
All artists will be required to complete WHS inductions for the facilities and equipment they use during their residency.

Contribution from participants
Participating artists will be requested to contribute a representative sample of work produced during the residency to the Megalo archive. The archive collection is used for the purposes of exhibition and scholarly research.  Artists may also be asked to present and discuss their work at a public forum. Megalo will hold the right to reproduce work made by residents for future promotion of Megalo programs but will in all such instances fully acknowledge the artist as the maker of the work.

Accommodation at Cargill's Cottage
Residents from outside the Canberra region will be provided with shared accommodation in Cargill's Cottage, a heritage-listed building close to our studios. The dwelling was constructed in 1927 as housing for one of ten dairy farms in the area.  The property has a live-in caretaker and two bedrooms for artist stays. The cottage is close to many amenities such as shops, markets and nature walks.
